Stephen and Taj look for the hidden immunity idol at Jalapao together.  Taj is pretty sure that it’s hidden at Tree Mail, and that’s exactly where they find it.  They decide that Stephen should hold on to the idol because he can hide it in his pocket; and besides, they figure the rest of the tribe will be looking at Taj to have it. Stephen takes the idol and indicates that since he now has it, he plans to keep it.

At Timbira, Sierra gets mad at Brendan for not telling her of the plan for the alliance.  Brendan apologizes, saying he didn’t get a chance to talk to her before the last reward challenge.

At this week’s Reward challenge, one tribe member has to sit on a platform while another tribe member spins them by unwinding a rope attached to the platform.  Once the rope is completely unwound, the dizzy member has to cross a balance beam to the finish line.  The first team across the finish line scores a point, and three points wins reward.

Reward is a trip to the Charmin Cafe, where there is coffee, pastries, a real toilet, and plenty of Charmin toilet paper.  The team that wins reward gets to also send someone from the losing tribe to Exile.  That person will choose someone from the winning tribe to join them.  The winning tribe member who goes to Exile does not get to participate in the reward.

Jalapao scores three points first and wins the reward.  They choose Brendan to go to Exile.  Instead of choosing Taj as he has in the past, Brendan choose Stephen to join him on Exile.

The rest of the Jalapao tribe is enjoying their reward, especially Taj.  This is the first tribal reward that she has gotten to take part in.  While they are eating their pastries, JT discovers letters from home for everyone on the tribe.

At Exile, Brendan and Stephen are getting to know each other, but Stephen declares that he doesn’t know Brendan well enough to trust him.

At Timbira, Tyson begins to catch on to Brendan’s plan, stating that Brendan is becoming too close to the other tribe.

The tribes are reunited for the Immunity Challenge.  Two members of each tribe will  alternate in launching a ball toward the rest of the tribe members, who are standing in a water course.  The other tribe members will try to catch the launched balls, while trying to keep the balls away from the other tribe.  The first tribe to catch 5 balls from either set of launchers will will immunity.  Stephen and Sydney are the ball launchers for Jalapao, with Erinn and Debbie launching for Timbira. JT scores the first two points for Jalapao, followed by Brendan scoring two points for Timbira. JT then scores another point for Jalapao, and knocks out a tooth. He then quickly scores another point, putting Jalapao ahead 4 to 2.  Tyson then scores 2 more points for Timbira, making it a tie game for the second time.  Tyson then scores another point,  and Timbira wins immunity.

At Jalapao’s camp, Taj shares her frustrations in talking about who they plan to vote out, saying that every time they make a decision at camp, it turns out differently at Tribal Council. This time, the tribe decides it will either be Taj or Spencer who will be voted out- Taj, because of her outburst and Spencer because of his performance at the immunity challenge.

At tribal council, Joe tells everyone he will feel better if Taj looks him in the eye and tells him that she does not have the hidden idol.  She does, and Joe tells Jeff he believes her.  In the end, Spencer Duhm is the fifth person voted out of Survivor: Tocantins.

In last week’s episode of Survivor, Brendan decided to accept the role of tribe leader for Timbira, since it had been discussed at the previous Tribal Council.  Coach thinks the tribe would be better off if he was the leader, and plans to assume that role once Brendan is voted off.  Tyson is indifferent to the whole matter, as he hasn’t really be paying attention.

At Jalapao, Taj finds the opportunity to talk to Stephen about the plan that she and Brendan have concocted for the alliance with her, Brendan, Stephen and Sierra.  Stephen is elated.

At the Reward Challenge, three members of each tribe will stand with a pole across their back.  Two members of the other tribe will dictate which tribe members will get two 20 pound weights placed on their pole.  If the weight gets too heavy, the pole holders can drop out.  The last person standing will win reward for their tribe.  The reward for this challenge is a camp raid, where two members of the winning tribe will visit the other tribe and take two items of their choice. The winning tribe will also send a member of the losing tribe to Exile.

Pole holders are JT, Joe and Taj for Jalapao and Tyson, Brendan and Debbie for Timbira.  Weight is added to each person until they drop out.  Brendan drops out with 180 pounds, Tyson with 140, JT with 220, and Joe with 140.  It’s up to both women, who each have 100 pounds.  Debbie drops out, leaving Taj as the sole person left standing.  Jalapao wins reward and chooses Sierra to go to Exile.

Brendan and Taj had made a plan to choose either Sierra or Stephen, depending on which tribe won the challenge, and then Sierra or Stephen would choose the other to accompany them.  However, Brendan had not talked to Sierra about the plan, so she did not choose Stephen to go with her.  She did, however, choose the next best person, Taj, so Taj was able to explain the plan to her at Exile.

JT & Joe raid the Timbira camp and select one bag of beans and one container of water.  They are thinking ahead, and decide that if there is ever a tribal switch and they end up on Timbira for some reason, they’d be pissed if there wasn’t any food because they took it all.  Back at Jalapao, however, Sandy is irritated with their decision and loudly complains about it. Sandy is also irritated with the fact that Sydney is constantly flirting with all the guys on the tribe.

At the Immunity Challenge, one member of both tribes will race against each other along a zigzag course to retrieve a puzzle piece, and race back to the mat.  Once the first person is back, another person goes out, until all eight puzzle pieces are retrieved.  Tribes then have to solve the puzzle, which is a phrase, to win immunity.  Jalapao is ahead on the course, but Timbira catches up to them so both tribes are even going into the solving phase.  Timbira figures out what the phrase is, and works quickly to put the pieces in the correct sequence.  They solved the puzzle first and win immunity.

At Jalapao’s camp, the consensus is that Sandy will be voted out.  However, Taj sticks up for her, saying that Sandy performs better at the challenges than Sydney.  This makes some of the guys debate their decision.  However, in a 5 to 2 vote at Tribal Council, Sandy Burgin is voted out of Jalapao.

When Timbira returned from tribal council Erinn felt the need to tell the tribe that the only reason she was hanging out with Candace was to find out what she was up to.

The next day, Timbira is eating their beans and rice but it doesn’t set well with Jerry.  His stomach is upset and he’s sure that it’s because of the beans.

At Jalapao, even though they got the fishing equipment at the last challenge, they aren’t quite sure how to use it.  Once they figure it out, they catch minnows to use as bait.

The tribes head to their first reward challenge.  Six members of each tribe are blindfolded and tied together in pairs.  The remaining tribe member will be the caller, directing the pairs through a maze.  Each pair has to retrieve a bucket and then fill the bucket with either water or corn from a tower.  The caller would then direct each pair to a trough, where they would empty their bucket.  The tribes had to fill both their troughs and raise two tribal flags to win reward.

The reward was chairs, blankets and pillows.

Joe called for Jalapao and Debbie called for Timbira.  Jalapao worked well together, following Joe’s instructions, and won the reward.  Jalapao also got to select someone from Timbira to go to Exile, and they again chose Brendan.  Brendan got to choose a member of Timbira to accompany him, and once again he chose Taj.

At Exile, Brendan and Taj once again were faced with two urns.  This time, Taj’s urn had the clue, which she shared with Brendan. The new clue confirmed their belief that the idol was at their camps.  Taj and Brendan also concocted a plan that involved one other member from each of their tribes.

At Timbira, Coach asked everyone not to go off and talk with others, while he went off with Tyson.  Coach told Tyson that he wanted him to be his ‘assistant coach’.

The tribes  head to the Immunity Challenge, where two tribe members at a time would race out to retrieve a crate.  After six crates were retrieved, the tribes had to build a staircase using the crates, and spell out their tribe name.  After building the staircase, the entire tribe had to race to the top and raise their flag.  Tribes are neck and neck until it comes to building the staircase, when Jalapao pulls ahead and wins immunity.

Back at the Timbira camp,  Jerry is feeling very ill.  Brendan wanders off by himself to search for the hidden idol, which he discovers at the Tree Mail site.  Coach tries to convince the rest of the tribe to vote for Erinn at Tribal Council.

At Tribal Council, a leader is discussed.  The tribe thinks their leader should be Brendan, but Coach feels that he himself is the most qualified.  Jeff tells Coach that he has an ego problem.

The tribe votes, and contrary to what Coach wanted, Jerry is voted out.

With Carolina voted out at Tribal Council, the Jalapao tribe returns to camp.  Sandy is happy to have survived the vote, and will be around for at least 3 more days.

The next day, Jalapao decides to hunt for termites since they don’t have another source of protein.  Remember, they didn’t get any of the beans or rice the first day.  Speaking of beans and rice, after they get their fire started, Timbira has an argument over how to cook their beans and rice.  Coach thinks they should combine the two, while Candace thinks they should be separate.

At Timbira, Sierra tells Brendan about the hidden idol on their beach.  She chooses to tell him because he was the only person to  not vote for her in the original “first impressions” vote.  They head to the beach and find the first clue.  They think they have the second location figured out and are in the process of digging a big hole when Debbie finds them.  Sierra, thinking quickly, tells her that she and Brendan are digging a fire pit so that they can have a bonfire on the beach later.

Back at Jalapao, while talking, Taj lets it slip that she is married to Eddie George.  Most of the guys are impressed (only Stephen doesn’t have a clue who Eddie George is), but minds start working, figuring she doesn’t need the money.

The two tribes meet Jeff for the Immunity Challenge.  In this challenge, three members from each team will be in the water, retrieving balls.  They will have to shoot the balls  at a  basket, while the other team tries to take the ball away.  The first tribe to score three baskets will win.  After each point is scored,  three different members  for each team will take to the water.  The winning tribe will not only win Immunity, but also fishing gear, and the chance to send one member of the losing team to Exile.

Since Timbira has one more  member, Debbie sits out the challenge.  Starting out for Jalapao is Taj, Stephen and Sydney; with Sierra, Candace andTyson for Timbira.  After a fight,  Candace scores the first basket for Timbira.  Next for Jalapao is JT, Joe and Sandy; with Erinn,  Brendan and Tyson for Timbira.  Tyson scores for Timbira, so it’s 2-0 Timbira.   Next up is Taj, Sydney and Sandy for Jalapao  and Candace, Erinn and Sierra for Timbira.  Sydney scores for Jalapao, 2-1 Timbira.  JT, Joe and Spencer are up for Jalapao, with Brendan, Coach and Jerry for Timbira.  JT scores for Jalapao, evening the score at 2 baskets for Timbira and 2 for Jalapao. The next team to score would win.  For Jalapao, it’s Sydney, Stephen and Taj; for Timbira, Tyson, Sierra and Candace.  Stephen scores, winning the challenge for Jalapao.

Jalapao wins Immunity and the fishing gear.  They choose Branden to go to Exile.  Jeff hands Brendan a note, telling him that he can choose one member of the winning tribe to go to Exile with him.  Brendan chooses Taj.   At Exile, Brendan and Taj have to choose between two urns.  One urn has the hidden idol clue, and one doesn’t.  Taj chooses an urn, and doesn’t get the clue.  Brendan gets  the clue, and shares it with Taj.  The clue tells them  that the idol is somewhere at their  camp, they believe.   Besides the clue, Brendan also got a note saying that he could switch tribes if he wanted.  He chose to  stay with Timbira.

Back at Timbira, the castaways discuss voting out Coach.  Candace is leading the discussion.  Debbie tells Coach and Tyson what Candace has been saying.  Candace works on Erinn, telling her to vote for Coach.  Coach later tells Erinn, Candace and Jerry to vote the original plan, which is to get rid of Sierra, but in reality, Coach wants Candace gone, and secretly tells the others to vote for Candace.

The theme of the discussion at Tribal Council is trust.  Nearly everyone tells Jeff that it’s really too early to trust people in this game.  Jeff calls for the vote, and in a vote of 7-1, Candace is blindsided and is voted out of Survivor.

The new season of Survivor started out with the 16 castaways riding on trucks across the tundra of the Brazilian highlands.  They had already been divided into tribes: the Black tribe, Timbira; and the Red tribe, Jalapao. Once they reached the starting point, Jeff told the two tribes that they had to unload the trucks as quickly as possible, and each tribe got to keep what they unloaded.   Working together, Timbira unloaded supplies like crazy, while Jalapao only got a few things.  Timbira got all the water and the rice while Jalapao got no food or water.

After the trucks were unloaded, Jeff told the tribes that they would be hiking to their camps, an approximately 4 hour trek in 100 plus degree heat.  He also told the tribes that they would each be voting on one person who would not make the journey.  Everyone assumed that this meant someone from each tribe would  be voted out immediately.

The vote was based solely on first impressions, since the tribes did not have time to get to know each other.  Jalapao voted for Sandy, the oldest; and Timbira voted for Sierra, because she looked like she didn’t want to be there.  After the vote, Sandy said she was pissed, and Sierra was surprised, explaining that she had strep throat and was a little out of it.

Jeff then told Sierra and Sandy that instead of having to hike with their tribes, they would be taking a helicopter to their camps.  Sandy  was happy and Jeff told her she shouldn’t be, since the first impression she made on her tribe wasn’t favorable.

While the tribes started their journey, carrying  supplies and following a map, Sandy and Sierra boarded the helicopter.  As each one was dropped off at their respective camps, they had a note waiting for them.  The note gave them an option ~ to start building camp before the others arrived, or to look for a hidden immunity idol to be used at the first tribal council.  Sandy chose to look for the idol, while Sierra started building camp.

When the rest of the tribe arrived at the Jalapao site, they were a little shocked that Sandy had not done anything while waiting for them.  The Timbira tribe was pleased that Sierra had gotten a shelter built.

The next day, Sandy continued to look for the idol but with no success, telling her tribe that she was going to the bathroom.

The tribes meet up with Jeff for the Immunity Challenge.  In this challenge, 6 tribe members had to race over a series of sand hills to the river, where there was a boat with puzzle planks.  They had to gather the planks and race back over the hills, and deliver the planks to the other two tribe members, who would then have to build a staircase with the planks.  Once the staircase was completed correctly, the entire tribe was to climb the staircase, where two members would then manuever a peg through a table maze to raise their tribe flag.  The first tribe to raise their flag would win immunity and fire.

For Jalapao, Sandy and Taj would build the staircase, while Sierra and Erinn would build for Timbira.  The rest of the two tribes would be racing over the sand hills to retrieve the planks.  Jalapao got the planks first and started on the staircase.  Sandy took control and got the staircase built.  Spencer and Sydney were the two Jalapao tribemates who worked the table maze.

Once Timbira got the planks back to the girls, Sierra and Erinn got the stairs built.  Erinn and Brendan worked the table maze easily, raising their flag first.  Timbira won immunity and fire.

Back at the Jalapao camp, everyone has decided that they are voting for Sandy.  Taj, Sandy and Carolina are in the river, and Carolina is telling them that they really need to be working.  Taj tells this to Spencer, and he seems to convince the rest of the tribe that Sandy really worked hard at the challenge, and that Carolina needs to be the one to go.

Jalapao heads to the first tribal council where they discuss the first three days with Jeff.  He calls for the vote, where Sandy receives one vote, while Carolina receives the other seven.  Carolina is the first voted out of Survivor: Tocantins.

Here on the West Coast, Survivor: Tocantins has not yet premiered. Here’s a little preview of what’s in store:

Jeff Probst claims that this season of Survivor will be the best season yet. First impressions will play a big role all season. After the castaways are divided into tribes, they will have their first vote, immediately isolating 2 people, one from each tribe. The entire season will be based on overcoming first impressions.

I can’t wait for the first episode!

Jeff Probst Thoughts on Tocantins Cast

Jeff Probst, host of Survivor, weighs in with his thoughts on this season’s contestants.

He says that this will be a completely different season from Gabon, as there are so many likable castaways this season. He says this is a fun cast.

Tyson is one of Jeff’s favorites this season. Jeff says Tyson has Richard Hatch’s diabolical mind.

Deb is one of the oldest contestants this season, but she doesn’t look her age. She is very fit.

Spencer may overthink the game since he’s been a fan for so long and knows the show inside and out. Spencer would have been on Survivor: Micronesia Fans Vs. Favorites but he wasn’t old enough.

Sandy will be voted off early. She’s likable, but too old.

Jeff believes JT will get flirted with by the girls.

He thinks Joe will get compared to Colby as he is a likable, good-looking guy. Joe should last a long time.

Carolina is tough and will be in the middle of the pack.

Stephen will have a hard time fitting in. The majority of the contestants this season are young and hip. Stephen will be an outsider.

Taj will have her work cut out for her. People use success to get rid of other contestants, so her being married to an ex-NFL player may work against her. Her smile will only take her so far.

Jeff is on the fence about Erinn. She will need to make a good first impression as a worker or she will fade early.

Sierra is one of Jeff’s favorites. She’s sassy. She will either dig deep and stay, or she will fade early.

Jerry is just lovable. He is very mature and has a “who needs my help” attitude.

Candace may fall victim to not being as strong as she needs to be in competitions. The heat and the bugs might get to her. She needs to prove that she’s a warrior and not a princess.

Brendan has business skills that will work on Survivor but he needs to overcome if people find out he’s successful, otherwise he’ll go fast.

Benjamin is one of the most fascinating people to ever be on Survivor. He’s very full of himself. He’s like Richard has was, in that he believes he’s one of the best. Jeff says he likes Benjamin, but wouldn’t want his sister to date him.

Sydney will be in the middle of the pack unless she breaks the cycle of hot blondes on the show. Every single time there is a hot blonde on the show she fades quickly.

Remember, these are Jeff’s opinions about this season’s cast.

His favorite Survivor contestant is Jon “Jonny Fairplay” Dalton, and he plans to play just like Fairplay did – use lies and play off the emotional weakness of others.
