Survivor: Cook Islands champion Yul Kwon had hoped to open a yogurt store chain in the North Beach neighborhood of San Francisco (perhaps with some of his winnings…).
However, when he initially applied to open his Red Mango shop and received a subsequent permit (and started leasing a spot and paying for renovations), there were only 4 Red Mango stores in the country. Since then that number has increased to more than 11, which officially makes Red Mango a chain, which makes it not welcome in North Beach. They hate chains.
San Franciscans are serious about these things (I should know; I live there). This was made quite clear by North Beach’s supervisor, when he said, “It doesn’t matter if he’s the Shah of Iran or the winner of ‘Survivor,’ the law’s the law’s the law “.
Ouch.
As a proud San Franciscan and frequenter of North Beach, I tend to agree that the Pinkberry-clone Red Mango doesn’t belong there. However, since Kwon seems like a pretty nice guy and has already put time and money into the effort, I can’t help but feeling a little bit sorry for him.
