So last night was the premiere of Survivor: Micronesia and I am eager to hear everyone’s initial response to the fans vs. favorites format as well as the new players.
Here’s your episode recap:
We start with some stunningly beautiful footage of Micronesia. By the way, since they neglect to tell us, Micronesia consists of hundreds of small islands in the western Pacific Ocean. It’s not like it’s a singular nation or anything (if you were curious). In fact, they’re in Palau once more.
We meet the fans (Airai). The fans meet the favorites (Malaki). There’s a lot of favorites from China and the Cook Islands. There’s also Jonny Fairplay (A favorite? Somebody is confused by the definition of that word), who asserts that “he’s the greatest player in the history of the game”. A modest fellow. The overwhelming vote for “favorite of the favorites” seems to go to Yau-Man, which I cannot agree with more.
Winners of the Immunity Idols: Yau-Man and Kathy, though Kathy wins only by courtesy of Yau-Man, who instructs a clueless looking Kathy to pick up the idol that she doesn’t see.
Let’s talk about Kathy: Kathy is clearly the outcast of the fans. She’s vaguely homophobic, asserting that she’s never been friends with a “homosexual” before. She also announces that “she just knew” that Chet was gay. She double checks though to make sure that “he doesn’t want to be a girl just because he is a homosexual”. I’m seriously not sure if Kathy’s actions here are some kind of brilliant strategy or if she’s just that clueless. I’m leaning towards the latter, and so is everyone else, as they were pissed that she got the idol, because they were all sure she’d be the first to go (as did the rest of the world).
Cut to the fans: They seem to think that they’re better off because the favorites “think they know how to do everything” which might ultimately hurt them. Best part though is when Mikey B coins Sawyer-like nicknames (Queer Eye, Hulk, etc.) for his team.
Cut to the favorites: They seem to think that they’re better off because they’ve done everything before. Personally, I think I’m siding with the fans on this one. I think the favorites might over analyze things because they think they’re too smart for their own good. Parvati also asserts that she still plans to flirt, but maybe a little less this time, though really it’s because she can only identify one worthy guy, “the big guy”. 5 seconds later there’s footage of the 2 of them rolling around in the dark.
Alliances already? Apparently so. Parvati and James. Amanda and Ozzy. Amy, Yau-Man, Jonathan and Eliza. Fairplay stands alone.
Yau-Man makes fire.
The Challenge: Sort of like an elaborate game of Mousetrap with puzzle-piece wheels, bridges and turnstiles. The result: the fans kick some convincing butt. The favorites have a lot of trouble assembling the puzzle-piece wheels and poor Eliza gets smashed in the face. Jonathan asserts that the fans had more heart.

Tribal Council: Jonny asks to go home. Jeff accuses him of being a quitter, but Jonny insists he is not. After 6 consecutive votes, Fairplay is the first to go. Yau-Man offers him parenting advice.
Some thoughts:
-Raise your hand if you didn’t remember half of the favorites. Granted, I haven’t watched much Survivor in the past, but even so, I can tell that some of the choices were curious.
-What the hell, Jonny Fairplay? I’m not complaining that you’re gone (and you had way too much screen time), but even this seemed like some kind of an elaborate scheme. What it was, I’m not quite sure (remind the country you exist, then go home to better things, I guess)…
-Not enough screen time for the Fans. So far though, I’m liking Mikey B.
What did you all think of the first episode? Who do you think will pose the biggest threat? Are you happy to see Jonny gone?
