Survivor: Gabon Episode 6 Recap

Last Thursday’s episode of Survivor was interesting but predictable, I thought.

Feeling slightly vulnerable, Ace formed an alliance with Matty over at Fang.  Ace swore on his mother, while Matty swore on his girlfriend, they would not vote each other out of the game.  While I don’t think Ace will have any qualms about breaking his pact, there’s no way Matty will go back on his word.  The boys decided to bring Sugar and Ken into their group for a solid foursome.

Ace told Sugar that everyone at Fang knows that she has the hidden Immunity idol.  In a very Ace-like move, he convinced Sugar to give him the idol.

Fang was still griping about the lack of rice, estimating that they may just have enough to get them to a merge.  Fang’s lack of food may not solely be because the old Fang ate three meals a day.  It may be because they had Dan on their tribe.  Over at Kota, Dan’s making a pig of himself, taking four and five portions for himself while everyone else makes do.

The tribes head to the Reward Challenge.  In this challenge, each tribe is tethered to a 20-foot long, 200-pound snake.  Starting on opposite sides, the tribes have to race around the course and try to catch the other tribe.  Tribe mates can untether themselves and drop out, but that puts more weight upon the remaining members, possibly causing them to move more slowly.  The winning tribe will win pastries, coffee and tea.

Sugar and Ken are the first to drop out for Fang, and Susie drops out for Kota.  Kelly then drops out for Fang, followed closely by Crystal.  That leaves only Matty and Ace carrying the snake for Fang.   Kota quickly gains on the lagging Fang, Marcus tags Matty, and Kota wins reward.

Jeff hands Kota a plate of pastries that they can eat while choosing who from Fang to send to Exile.  Crystal starts crying, saying it’s frustrating to keep losing.   Crystal’s not looking much like an Olympic athlete to me.  She doesn’t seem to be pulling her weight on these challenges.

Kota sends Sugar back to Exile once again, and returns to camp with their pastries.  To keep Dan from hogging all the reward, the tribe decides to portion out the pastries and give each tribe members a share to do with as they please.  Randy realizes they are doing this because of Dan, and makes plans to distance himself from his former Fang tribe mate.

Sugar is starting to feel guilty about constantly being sent to Exile, because she’s getting to eat while the rest of her tribe is suffering.  Meanwhile, at camp, Crystal tries to convince her tribe that her crying is not a sign of weakness but of depression and frustration.  The tribe is beginning to think that maybe Crystal is a liability.

To add to Kota’s steadily growing supply of food, Bob and Marcus catch a sea turtle and the tribe feasts on turtle soup.

At the Immunity Challenge, each tribe is divided into 3 pairs, with each person in a pair tethered to the other.  Each pair has to navigate an obstacle course and retrieve pieces of a flagpole.  After they retrieve the pieces, the pairs have to return to their mat before the next pair can go.  A new obstacle is added to the course at the end of each round.  Once all pieces of the flagpole have been retrieved, the tribe to successfully assemble their flagpole and erect it first wins immunity.

First pairs out are Kelly and Sugar for Fang and Bob & Randy for Kota.  Kelly & Sugar seem to struggle.  Second pairs are Ace & Crystal for Fang, and Corinne and Charlie for Kota.  Third pairs are Matty & Ken for Fang, and Dan & Marcus for Kota.  Kota has a huge lead on Fang until Matty & Ken take to the course.  By the time all the flagpole pieces have been returned to the mat, teams are neck and neck.  Kota works as a group to assemble their flagpole; Ace insists that he doesn’t need the rest of Fang’s help.  Of course, Kota wins.  Jeff told Fang that they need to quit playing like individuals and start acting like a team.

Fang spends the rest of the day discussing who should be voted out.  Sugar tells Ken that she gave Ace the idol.  Ken told Sugar to get it back, so Sugar took it out of Ace’s belongings, and then told him she’d taken it back.   Another dramatic tribal council ensued, and in the end, Kelly was voted out.
